Santa Cruz City Council debates changes to in-law unit rules

Santa Cruz >> The Santa Cruz City Council deliberated Tuesday on proposed changes to rules governing in-law units, including new allowable lot and units sizes and a temporary relaxation of an owner-occupied policy to allow for life changes.
The council did not take a vote by press time but had begun sorting through options designed to encourage the creation of additional accessory dwelling units and the legalization of unpermitted dwellings.
A proposal approved by the city’s Planning Commission called for reducing the minimum size lot permitted to contain an ADU from 5,000 square feet to 4,500 square feet, which would add more than 780 properties eligible for an ADU.
